Science belongs in the hands of scientists

Only scholar-led infrastructure ensure the sustainable dissemination of scientific publications. The ‘Diamond Thinking’ Project at KIT is leading the path to scholar-led open-access publishing.

Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and developed in partnership with Stuttgart University, the project “Diamond Thinking” will run from September 2023 to August 2025. Its goal is to establish high-quality scientific journals for all major disciplines at KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) or to facilitate the transition of existing commercial journals into the academic sphere through a process known as “flipping.” This involves engaging in discussions with various scientific communities at KIT to inspire them with the idea of scientists shaping the future of scientific publishing.

This is made possible by KIT Library’s longstanding experience in open access book publication and repository services offered to scholars. KIT’s in-house publisher, KIT Scientific Publishing (KSP), along with their co-publishing partners, will offer high-quality and cost-effective services for open access journal publication. All journals will be modelled to achieve financial sustainability in the long run and operate as Diamond Open Access Journals, thus eliminating publishing costs for authors.

The project commenced spectacularly in the fall of 2023 when the prominent international scientific society, the “International Association for Hydrogen Safety (HySafe),” decided to flip the publication of their renowned conference proceedings series from Elsevier to KIT’s in-house scientific publisher. This ongoing transition is an important indicator of the strong demands of the scientific community to regain more control over the publication and circulation of their research outputs. Initial discussions regarding this transition took place at the time of the project proposal, and at present, proceedings will expand to a full-fledged journal. This process of transitioning the new journal will serve as a best-practice model within the framework of the BMBF project. This flip was communicated via internal channels at KIT.

Professor Thomas Jordan (ITES), the leading editor of the proposed journal, anticipates entirely new possibilities for the discipline with this move to the open-access infrastructure at KIT. He successfully convinced the international editorial board of HySafe to move away from traditional publishing services with Elsevier. This shift allows HySafe to operate with more freedom of decision-making, addressing the existing gaps in research publication avenues for issues related to hydrogen safety and broadening the global representation of the discipline.

The brainstorming sessions revealed the potential of an open-access model for a new journal, inspiring activities that go beyond a simple “flipping” of existing publications. The new journal will be founded by HySafe in collaboration with KIT and the co-publishing partner Ubiquity Press and will strive to attain the status of a Diamond Open Access Journal.

…

Weiterlesen ›

[1,30

post-20181","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-aktuelles","category-ksp
["GET
