1. Soeben ist Ihre Veröffentlichung „Technology Assessment in Japan and Europe“ erschienen: Wie würden Sie den Inhalt in drei, vier Sätzen zusammenfassen?
The goal of technology assessment (TA) – which comprises one concept of interdisciplinary problem-oriented research, policy consulting (such as parliamentary TA), and public dialogue – is to lend support to society and policy making by promoting understanding of the problems related to the grand sociotechnical challenges of our time, as well as to assess the available options for managing them. Researchers from Japan and Europe reflected together in this book on country-specific developments to identify the conditions that must be present to anchor TA in science, politics, and society. This book helps us to learn about different cultural conditions that have promoted the formation of a reflexive science.

The cooperation between Germany and Japan is in its infancy regarding the topics of studies on science, technology and society (STS), of ethics of technology, of social aspects of technology development, and in general regarding the issues of technology assessment. Challenges presented by the Japanese Science and Technology Agency, were responded to co-organise a workshop in Tokyo in 2014 and following the publication of this book.

One and half years. Starting the process after the workshop with the invitation to the authors (presenters at the workshop), and to the responsibles of the institutions involved in the publication. Waiting for the papers and organising the book took almost one year. The final text revision and editing took more than half year.

4. Stichwort „Manuskript“: Schreiben Sie an einem PC, Notebook, Tablet oder mit dem Stift?
Notebook, tablet and pen.

Editing and language revision services are of up most importance.

6. Was bereitet Ihnen beim Schreiben die größte Freude und was nervt Sie dabei am meisten?
Delays and no-answers are disturbing. But greater joy can come with increased confidence on the authors and open-minded opinions.

To write with a pen can be relaxing. Or to read without tight timetables, and to have moments for reflexion. Available time is very important to recover.

Authors as Umberto Eco or Michael Crichton are examples of mixing scientific knowledge, wisdom and good novel writing.

Sherry Turkle: Alone Together (2011). – Ursula Huws et al.: The transformation of work in a global knowledge economy (2006). – Bijker, Hughes & Pinch: The social construction of technological systems (1987).

This publishing house has very good reputation and high standards. The book is also a complement of the collaboration of KIT with JST. Our compromise in this collaboration was to publish the results of the exciting discussion in Tokyo on technology assessment and the futures for this international collaboration. The conditions offered by KSP were excellent.
