1. Soeben ist Ihre Veröffentlichung Influence of strain on the functionality of ink-jet printed thin films and devices on flexible substrates erschienen.
Flexible devices are inexpensive and large area compatible as compared to those on rigid substrate. However, during fabrication and service, they are subjected to complex strains, resulting in crack formation or delamination within the layers, affecting the device performance. Therefore, it is necessary to understand their failure mechanisms by correlating their electrical or structural properties with applied strain, along with detailed microstructural investigations.

Ink-jet printed devices on a flexible substrate are inexpensive, large area compatible and targeted for innovative applications as compared to rigid substrates. However, during fabrication and service, these devices are subjected to complex strains due to the use of flexible substrate, multilayer structure, and encapsulation, which can lead to crack formation or delamination within the layers, ultimately affecting the device performance. Therefore, it is necessary to understand their failure mechanisms by correlating their electrical or structural properties with applied strain. Hence, ink-jet printed films and devices, processed through different routes such as precursor-based Indium oxide thin film transistors, Indium oxide nanoparticulate films and Barium Strontium Titanate / polymer nanocomposite capacitors were fabricated on flexible substrate and tested (Micro tensile tests, in-situ synchrotron tensile tests, and bending fatigue tests), to understand and assess the devices performance under uniaxial and cyclic loading conditions through detailed microstructural investigations.

It took around 5 years to formulate an idea, experimentation to prove the concept and finally, it’s documentation in the form of the manuscript.

4. Stichwort „Manuskript“: Schreiben Sie an einem PC, Notebook, Tablet oder mit dem Stift?
PC

Inserting references through Mendeley software. It is very simple to use and systematic.

6. Was bereitet Ihnen beim Schreiben die größte Freude und was nervt Sie dabei am meisten?
The greatest pleasure in writing for me is the concrete formulation of an idea in mind and what annoys me the most is the repetitive and sometime obvious formatting errors in the manuscript.

While writing my thesis, I used to take breaks regularly. Sometimes, I even took a day or two off from writing to recover and resume with a fresh mind-set.

I would wish to try to write ‘The Kite Runner’ by Khalid Hussain.

Arzt, E. (1998). Size effects in materials due to microstructural and dimensional constraints: a comparative review. Acta Materialia. Kraft, O., Gruber, P. a., Mönig, R., & Weygand, D. (2010). Plasticity in´Confined Dimensions. Annual Review of Materials Research, 40(1). Kraft, O., & Volkert, C. A. (2001). Mechanical Testing of Thin Films and Small Structures. Advanced Engineering Materials, 3(3), 99–110.

I chose ‘KIT Scientific Publishing’ to publish my Ph.D. dissertation because it produces high standard research works and also offers the possibility to produce work of an Institute in a collective series.
